ChoreoLAB is a series of choreography workshops for dance artists of all genres who are interested in dance making, who want to develop their own choreographic voice, and who are eager to practice and hone their choreographic and editing skills.
ChoreoLAB is usually held in partnership with another dance organization and can be customized to fit the needs of attendees.
The 3-4 hour workshop divides into three sections with breaks in between.
Section 1 includes introductions and a warm-up. We'll get to know each other and review the order of events. Then we'll prepare for movement by getting our bodies heated and our joints greased up.
Section 2 focuses on generating movement and creating phrases. Various prompts are introduced in order to initiate movements unique to each individual. We then discuss and implement multiple choreographic tools, used to play with and manipulate the generated movements. We eventually combine those movements to create phrases.
Section 3 is dedicated to workshopping each other's phrases through facilitated mini "wreckings" and sharing the outcomes. This highly useful choreographic process not only provides participants with unique insight into their ideas, but also helps develop editing skills. Learn more about "wrecking".
Each ChoreoLAB is a stand alone workshop, focusing on a particular theme or set of tools and prompts - one workshop is not dependent upon the previous. Participants will glean something different with each workshop, building and adding to their choreographic toolbox.
Currently, these workshops focus on solo work. While any of the generated phrases can be adapted to group work, that is not the focus. We do not cover movement and composition tools for groups (duets, trios, etc.). If interest arises, we may address group work in future workshops.

9:30am - 1pm
1100 Kettner Blvd. San Diego, CA 92101
*Offered as part of Disco Riot's POP IN / POP OUT series
ChoreoLAB: Merging Influences dives into how we can take the cultural influences of our own individual heritage, which may differ from our practiced dance forms, and bring that into our dance making. Through a cultural lens, we’ll explore movement generation, using various tools and prompts. We’ll discover and play with ways to manipulate our own movements. We’ll create short phrases and share them, and then discuss our outcomes and learnings. Together, we can connect with our unique heritage through our dance making, even if our practice dance form is disconnected from our heritage.
What to bring:
- link to videos of traditional dances from your heritage
- short poem or literature passage from your heritage
Fee: POP IN/POP OUT classes are on a tiered payment scale - no one turned away for lack of funds.
